The Challenge

Softage is tasked with creating a custom application that connects heterogeneous software systems and fully supports data interchange in DICOM and XML formats. Our customer needs custom interfacing software to support data interchange between their own software product, X-ray medical devices, and Hospital Information System. So the customer requests Softage develop custom software to connect these systems, and fully support data interchange in DICOM and XML format. The interfacing software needs to support five connections to external systems, all connections compliant to industry standards. Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is a standard for handling, storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging. It includes a file format definition and a network communications protocol.

Solution Overview

The first phase of project involves processing only DICOM data coming to and from X-ray devices. Specialists from Softage, in cooperation with the customer, design and implement the first version of the interfacing software. The interfacing software transforms procedure information data into DICOM standard, and transfers it to an X-ray device. The X-ray device information is sent back to the interfacing software for further processing. Finally, complete patient information including demographic data and X-ray information can be easily obtained from the database. The software works fine and according to customer expectations. Further system development might consist of adding HL7 compatibility and connection to HL7 data feeds.
